What makes a collection
A collection is more than an accumulation of objects. It develops through a question about a medium, place, theme or generation. Start with one work and write down why it matters to you.

Choose a focus and a budget
Set a total budget that includes framing, shipping and care. Compare several works by one artist and across media before deciding. An original canvas, numbered photograph and open-edition poster carry different terms.

Document and care for each work
Record artist, title, year, medium, dimensions, edition, signature, price and acquisition date. Keep invoices, certificates, correspondence and condition photographs. Light, environment and framing matter especially for works on paper.
Can its value rise?
Cultural value and future resale price are different. A collection may gain financial value, but no individual purchase is guaranteed to do so.
